ElevenLabs Music v2.5 is now the default: lossless caps, reference blocks, not a UMG catalog drop

v2.5 is now the ElevenMusic default (official, 11 September)

On 11 September 2026 ElevenLabs’ ElevenMusic blog introduced Music v2.5 as its “best music model yet,” live in ElevenMusic. It is now the default for prompted and reference generation. Music v2 remains available. That is not a v2 retirement notice.

On sound, the blog says tracks are more layered and complex, with more natural-sounding instruments, richer melodies, and greater depth. This note does not rate the audio. Music Ally (14 September) reported that ElevenLabs called out the most obvious gains in vocal-led and acoustic-heavy genres: R&B, soul, hip hop, rock, metal, orchestral, and cinematic. That genre list is press, not the blog’s summary bullets.

Lossless caps and the “you have rights” caveat

Official lossless download caps: five a day on Free, 400 a month on Pro. The blog says users have rights to what they make on every plan, including Free; rights attach at creation; cancelling or downgrading does not change what is already yours. It also says rights and commercial use vary by subscription tier, and points to Terms. “You have rights” is not a blanket clearance for stores or ads.

The Music Model-Specific Terms, last updated 26 May 2026, currently name v1 and v2. When we checked that page, it did not carve v2.5 out as a separate Version. Use the blog for the numbers and the live Terms for commercial scope.

Downloads blocked on other-artist references

The blog says downloads are blocked on tracks that reference other artists’ songs. Do not plan a BGM or MV workflow that exports an other-artist reference.

Separate from the UMG multi-year deal

ElevenLabs writes that its recent multi-year strategic agreement with Universal Music Group, covering licensing and product development, is separate from Music v2.5. Music Ally’s headline is that UMG was not involved in this model, and that the fan remix platform is a different product still in development. A default-model bump in ElevenMusic is not a UMG-catalog drop into ElevenMusic.

ElevenCreative and the API (press)

Music Ally reports that v2.5 is also available in ElevenCreative for marketers and media companies, and via ElevenLabs’ API for developers. The official v2.5 blog is mainly about the ElevenMusic default.
