SFX houses form Professional Sound Alliance; a library license is not an AI-training right

What happened

Music Business Worldwide reported on 18 September 2026 that sound-effects houses including Pro Sound Effects, Boom Library, and Sound Ideas formed the Professional Sound Alliance. The same article dates the launch to Thursday 24 September. Chair is Douglas Price, CEO of Pro Sound Effects. The targets are Data Piracy (scraping libraries into commercial AI without permission or pay) and Sync Piracy (unlicensed use in film, TV, and games). The site hosts a petition and a downloadable seal. MBW says it is not a litigation fund or a collective bargaining agreement.

What changed

The Alliance’s contrast was that SFX had no RIAA or SAG-AFTRA equivalent. What launched is a petition and a seal, not a lawsuit or a mandatory license. MBW notes Pro Sound Effects and Boom have already licensed catalogs to Sony AI’s generative SFX model Woosh. The objection is the unlicensed version of that transaction.

Whose work this changes

For producers mixing stock SFX and generative SFX for games or YouTube, a sync license is not an AI-training right. Pro Sound Effects’ standard Lifetime License expressly bars training machine-learning / AI algorithms and sells a separate rights-cleared training dataset (the company lists 1.27 million sounds). Boom and Sound Ideas terms need the same check. Primary sources do not support “we bought the library, so the generative tool is cleared.”

Do this today

Open the license page of the SFX library in use, record whether AI training is barred, and keep a note on whether any generative SFX tool cites a rights-cleared training set or a training license.
