For people uploading AI music to YouTube: disclosure now lists music that is the main focus (exact switch date not announced)

As of early October 2026, YouTube Help lists music that is the main focus of a video among required GenAI disclosures. YouTube has not announced the exact switch date. Set Studio Attributes “AI use” to Yes. Disclosure itself does not limit audience or monetization. Whether BGM counts is undefined.

What happened

YouTube Help’s page “Disclosing use of GenAI content”, as it stood in early October 2026, lists required disclosure for GenAI that “Creates music that's the main focus of the video.” Secondary source AuditSocials reports the line sat among examples as “AI generated music” in its 2 October capture and moved into the core list around 3 October. YouTube has not published an announcement date, so the exact switch date is not officially stated.

What changed

AI music moved from the examples list into the core required items, with the qualifier that it is the main focus. YouTube does not define “main focus.” Whether a bed under a talking-head video counts is not answered on the Help page. The same page states that disclosing AI content will not limit a video’s audience or its eligibility to earn money.

Whose work this affects

This hits credit/disclosure. Anyone uploading a lyric video or music video whose generated song is the point of the watch now has Help-page steps: in YouTube Studio, Attributes, set “AI use” to Yes. For a lyric-video upload today, tick Yes before publishing. Creators who consistently skip disclosure may get a manual label, removal, or suspension from the YouTube Partner Program (YPP, the monetization program). Voice or audio repair, effects on previously recorded audio, and cloning one’s own voice for voice-overs remain listed as not requiring disclosure. This is not legal advice.

Do this today

In YouTube Studio, open unpublished or recent uploads where an AI song is the main focus, check that Attributes “AI use” is Yes, and save.
