For creators releasing originals via indie distributors: a deal that trains only on rightsholder-approved tracks (delivery license is separate)
On 15 October 2026 GRAI announced two deals with Songtradr-owned MassiveMusic: a delivery feed and an opt-in dataset licensed for training GRAI’s music model. The training license does not authorize downstream creative use of recordings or compositions. The service is pre-launch; waitlist open.
What happened
On 15 October 2026 GRAI, an AI-music company, announced two agreements with MassiveMusic, part of Songtradr, from Warsaw (PR Newswire, primary). (1) Delivery: MassiveMusic will send participating independent and distributor catalogs to GRAI’s forthcoming social streaming service in a single feed. Rightsholders are to be paid and receive usage reports for plays under the applicable agreements. Tracks also arrive with enhanced metadata across more than 30 dimensions (mood, energy, instrumentation, key, era, and others). (2) Training: GRAI will train its own music foundation model on a dedicated opt-in dataset — tracks rightsholders have approved specifically for AI training through MassiveMusic’s opt-in system (only works the rightsholder affirmatively allows). The training license does not itself authorize downstream creative uses of recordings or compositions.
What changed
Delivery permission and training permission are split into separate contracts and separate approvals, and training is limited to opt-in approved tracks — now as a named commercial deal, not a policy slide. GRAI is one of the first two licensees of Music IP Holdings patents. It acquired Hangout in September (earlier note on this site). The product is pre-launch; the waitlist is open.
Whose work this affects
Anyone releasing originals through an indie distributor or library may be asked, separately from the delivery grant, whether those tracks may be used for AI training. A delivery license is not a training license. Even a training grant, in this announcement, does not cover downstream creative use. Check the contract for whether approval is required and what it covers. YouTube/game BGM commercial-license terms are not in this release.
Do this today
In your current distributor or library terms, check whether “use for AI training” is opt-in, opt-out (used unless you refuse), and a separate clause.
